World Polio Day-Gwinnett Rotarians Hold Polio Talk

The Rotary Clubs serving Gwinnett County, comprised of more than 300 Rotarians in nine clubs, will mark World Polio Day on Wednesday, October 24, with a community-wide polio discussion. The public is invited to hear the latest news concerning polio from Dr. Abhijeet Anand, a medical epidemiologist who focuses on polio at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. In addition, Past District 6910 Governor Bill Strickland will tell a personal story about polio immunizations in India.

Past District Governor Bill Strickland administers polio vaccine drops during a National Immunization Day (NID) in India.

The event will take place from 4:30 to 6 pm on October 24 in the Education Center at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce building, 6500 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, Georgia 30097. Hosting the community-wide polio discussion are the Rotary Club of Buford/North Gwinnett, the Rotary Club of Duluth, the Rotary Club of Gwinnett, the Rotary Club of Gwinnett Mosaic, the Rotary Club of Gwinnett Sunrise, the Rotary Club of Gwinnett Tomorrow, the Rotary Club of Lawrenceville, the Rotary Club of Peachtree Corners and the Rotary Club of Sugarloaf.

World Polio Day was established by Rotary International more than a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. The first polio vaccine was available in the United States in 1955. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99 percent.

GPEI is spearheaded by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the CDC and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).  It includes the support of governments and other private sector donors.

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. The virus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person’s brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis. According to the World Health Organization, there is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio vaccine, for as little as sixty cents each, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.

Since 1979, Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. The disease remains endemic in three countries -- Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan -- although other countries remain at risk for imported cases.
Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.

Rolling on the River Sept '18 Conference Update

We all had a great time in Charleston for the 2018 District Conference. Take it from these first time District Conference attendees:

"I found my first Rotary District Conference to be enlightening, educational and a lot of fun! Meeting Rotarians from other parts of our District and visiting the House of Friendship was a nice way to learn what other clubs are doing to make their communities a better place. The speakers were all captivating and engaging and the workshops were well organized and informative. I especially enjoyed the time “away from it all” to get to know members of my own club better, and the special dinner on the USS Yorktown was truly amazing. District Conference is a great way to expand your Rotary experience. I would definitely encourage anyone who has never been to make plans to attend in 2019." -Greg Elder, The Rotary Club of Canton

"I was so impressed by the level of detail and thought that was put into district conference. I laughed so many times. I was moved to tears. I was enthused and excited to be learning among such great people. I was proud to be a Rotarian. Such a great event!!!" -Heather Kellen (E-Club of the South)

A ventriloquist provided entertainment at an evening dinner session at District Conference in Charleston.

"Rotary International's scope of service above self activities is generally hard to measure at a local club level. However, my first District 6910 conference was an eye-opener. There, I first connected me with a larger community of Rotarians, the finest people I have ever known. While the traditions are fun, the experience of District Conference keeps me enthused. I look forward to renewing friendships and seeing new faces in Greenville. I am excited for new opportunities to validate and often improve ideas that connect Rotarians and our community." -Al Trembley, Rotary Club of Hall County

We will have a special program for First Time Attendees prior to the start of Rolling on the River District Conference.  This is a great opportunity to learn about "What to Expect" at a Rotary District Conference.

Rolling on the River August '18 Conference Update

District Governor Bruce Azevedo is a great believer in teamwork. Teamwork is vital to Rotary. Rotary cannot achieve complete success without the participation and cooperation of all members of the team. We would like to have all team members attend Rolling on the River District Conference May 2-5, 2019. District Conference brings our clubs' successes full circle. Here, you will inspire your fellow Rotarians with what you and your club are doing and you will be inspired by them.

If you've been to a district conference before, we are bringing back a few traditions:  cookie breaks, local service project, child care during the dinners, and clubs will have the opportunity to share their outstanding projects. There will be group activities or you can visit Greenville on your own. Click here for information on Greenville and all it has to offer.

Who knows? Maybe there will be new club traditions started on Saturday, May 4 with clubs inviting their conference attendees to lunch with ample time afterwards to explore Greenville.

Due to the success from last year's conference, we will offer again a 1st time Attendee Session on Thursday, prior to the official start of the conference, to learn about expectations at a District Conference.

Some new additions to District Conference this year will be themed dinners, promotion of sponsorships, and lots of fun that will be happening in our House of Friendship.

Click here for conference agenda or visit Rotary6910Conference.org/Agenda.

Click here for sponsorship information or visit Rotary6910Conference.org/Sponsors.
